ORIGINAL
COMPOSITIONS
When creating content on a very tight budget, there's no room for
licensing music. Fortunately, my own interest in music coincides
with my work, and I sometimes get a chance to write and record my
own pieces.
The first set of MP3 clips comprises music I created for video clips
produced for 4D, Inc., the first being a simple introdductory chime
for 4D Mail. Also in the realm of the ultra-simple was background
music I put together for a commercial for the launch of 4th
Dimension 6.8. As my comfort in the studio grew, so did the complexity
of the tunes. In 2002, I was asked to create a video commemorating
15 years of 4D in the United States. The video turned out to be
15 minutes long, as did the accopmanying music. My idea was for
the style of the music to change as the years depicted in the video
went along, so it made sense to me that the composition start out
as a bouncy 1980's synth-pop piece, progressing to the 90's as piano-laced
house music, and so on. The portion here reflects the transition
from the 90's to the 2000's, and the change from video footage
to a very rapid-fire photo montage.
For my own web use, I've created a short, dance-music oriented loop
entitled Tekhousefunkloop.
Such loops are fun and fairly quick to make, and work well in Flash
pieces.
As for entire songs, one of my first original full-length recordings
was a moody number with the working title "Heart,"
available here as a brief clip. This was followed by "Thought"
(working title), a piece rooted in dark, dubby sounds. My most recent
tune is "Mine,"
a funky electro-pop number. All of these are works in progress,
as vocals and additional guitar work have yet to be recorded.
MIXES
AND MASH-UPS
Additionally, I spend some time as a DJ, and one of the fun things
to do is creating new remixes. Right now, "mash-ups" are
all the proverbial rage, wherein two or more songs are laid over
one another to create a unique, new mix. My contributions to the
genre thus far are "Work
It, Lovers" - a happy meeting between Depeche Mode and
Missy Elliot - and "Ain't
Nobody Harder Than My Friend," a live turntable collision
between Groove Armada and Daft Punk.
